Bob Jeffrey Named CEO, Michael Madel Becomes President

NEW YORK (AdAge.com) -- WPP Group's J. Walter Thompson Co. announced changes to top management, beginning with a new chief executive for the global advertising agency network.

Bob Jeffrey, president of JWT's North American operations, will become CEO of the global network. Mr. Jeffrey, 50, succeeds Peter Schweitzer, 64, JWT's current president-CEO. Mr. Schweitzer's duties as president shift to Michael Madel, 53, currently president-CEO of Europe, Middle East and Africa. All changes are effective Jan. 1, 2004.

New roles
Mr. Jeffrey has been president of JWT North America since April 2001; he joined JWT's New York office as president in March 1998. He becomes the ninth CEO in the agency's 140 year history. Mr. Jeffrey retains his corporate role as head of North America in addition to adding oversight of JWT Latin America.

Mr. Madel, a 13-year employee of JWT, will report to and work closely with Mr. Jeffrey under the new management structure. He will continue to lead Europe, Middle East and Africa while adding oversight of the Asia-Pacific region. He will also carry out companywide initiatives for Mr. Jeffrey.

As chairman, Mr. Schweitzer will provide companywide counsel on strategic issues, and will focus on continuing to build and strengthen global client relationships. During his nearly three-decade career at JWT, he has held numerous leadership positions, from chairman of JWT North America to chief operating officer.
