Former McCall President Dead at 80

NEW YORK ( -- Earle K. Angstadt, a former president of the McCall Pattern Co. and Abercrombie & Fitch Co., died Jan. 7. He was 80.

For 17 years, Mr. Angstadt led McCall as president-CEO before retiring in 1987. Before his post at McCall, he served as president-chairman of the board of Abercrombie & Fitch Co. for 16 years.

Started at Macy's
He began his career at R.H. Macy & Co. in 1946, where he became, at 22, the youngest senior buyer in the 100-year history of the store. During his six years at Macy's he also worked as an executive trainee and department manager.

From 1952-1964, he was the marketing executive to the senior VP-division manager of Young & Rubicam, where he was responsible for accounts such as Kaiser Aluminum, American Airlines, Remington Shavers, International Playtex, Time, Sports Illustrated, Piels Beer, Tussy Cosmetics and Simmons Mattresses.

Mr. Angstadt graduated from Dartmouth College in 1946, and attended the Amos Tuck Graduate School of Business, the Senior Executive Program at the Columbia Graduate School of Business, the IBM Executive Program and the Executive Program at the Aspen Institute. He also served in the U.S. Navy for three years and was honorably discharged in 1946.
