BBDO wins Long John Silver

Long John Silver's will break its first work Sept. 2 from BBDO Worldwide, New York, after naming the Omnicom Group shop the winner of a two-month shoot-out for broadcast creative duties. The $30 million creative account is the third Yum! Brands assignment for the Omnicom agency, which also handles KFC and Pizza Hut. BBDO was a late entry to the review, which at one point included Taco Bell agency Interpublic Group of Cos.' Foote, Cone & Belding Worldwide, San Francisco, and Interpublic sibling Campbell Ewald, Warren, Mich. "The fact that we are now owned by Yum Brands was not a factor in our decision," said Mike Baker, Long John Silver's VP-marketing. "BBDO had the best combination of strategic thinking, category insight and TV campaign ideas." Cliff Freeman & Partners, New York, also was a contender but was eliminated after the final round of pitches in late May. Kelly Osbourne's a Candie's Girl

Apparel maker Candie's has become the first marketer to sign Kelly Osbourne as a spokesperson. Ms. Osbourne, 17, will join R&B singer Ashanti and pop musician Vanessa Carlton in a print ad campaign scheduled for October issues of Gruner & Jahr USA's YM, Hearst Magazines' CosmoGirl, Primedia's Seventeen and Time Inc.'s Teen People. The ads, created in-house, are targeted to young women and will be shot by fashion photographer Tony Duran. Each will highlight Candie's fall line, as well as its own retail stores. Last year, the campaign featured music trio Destiny's Child. Ms. Osbourne is the daughter of heavy-metal rocker Ozzy Osbourne, whose family exploits are the content of MTV's hit show "The Osbournes." AOL TW/Advance cable deal altered

Aol time warner's cable operations will be trimmed by 2.1 million subscribers in an agreement reached with Advance/Newhouse Communications. Under the deal, Advance takes over management of cable systems serving homes in Alabama, California, Florida, Indiana and Michigan. Time Warner Cable takes over Advance's interest in Road Runner, the AOL Time Warner-branded high-speed Internet service. Time Warner Cable's operations will be down to 10.8 million subscribers, but remains the nation's second-largest cable operator behind AT&T Broadband, which stands on the brink of getting much larger in a proposed merger with Comcast. Advance, which owns magazines including Vanity Fair and GQ, is expected to take over management duties later this year.

Lifetime to launch mag

Lifetime Entertainment Services and Hearst Magazines said they will launch a magazine next year. The magazine will have the same name as the cable network on which it appears to be thematically based. Lifetime will launch in March 2003 as an every other monthly with a rate base of 500,000, before going monthly in September. The publication will carry the tagline, "Real Life. Real Women," that echoes the name of the network's new channel, Lifetime Real Women. Lifetime is owned by Hearst Corp. and the Walt Disney Co. DPZ ghost ads stripped of Lions

The International Advertising Festival stripped independent agency DPZ, Sao Paulo, of two Gold Lions the Brazilian agency won last week for Johnson & Johnson's lubricant gel KY in the cyber and press & poster competitions. On June 25, Johnson & Johnson issued a press release to Brazilian journalists in Portuguese stating J&J was unaware of the winning ad and that it was produced "without the involvement or approval of any of its staff." J&J also said in the statement that McCann-Erickson Worldwide was the marketer's agency for the KY brand in Brazil for the last three years. A statement from the festival on June 27 said: "After a thorough check conducted by O Estado de Sao Paulo [newspaper], the official Brazilian representative of the festival, it was concluded DPZ's top management was caught by surprise on this issue. It seems that a junior creative of the Rio de Janeiro office took a regretful initiative when entering inappropriately these ads." The press & poster Gold Lion was awarded to DPZ on June 18, and the cyber Gold on June 22. Stars come out for D.C. tourism

Singer Roberta Flack, first lady Laura Bush, District of Columbia Mayor Anthony Williams, Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle, Washington Freedom soccer player Mia Hamm and Washington Redskins football player Darrell Green, among others, are featured in nationally televised public service announcements starting last week to promote tourism in the nation's capital. Ms. Flack, who grew up in the Washington area and graduated from Howard University, opens the 30-second PSA in front of the Capitol singing the George Gershwin classic "Of Thee I Sing." American Tool Companies Hand Tools Division chose Interpublic's Gotham, New York, to handle the $4 million campaign for the launch of the Strait-Line Laser Level. ...
