Lorillard calls for halt of 'Truth' ads

No other tobacco makers rushed to join Lorillard Tobacco Co. in challenging the legality of ads from the American Legacy Foundation, but neither have they ruled out joining the challenge. Lorillard called the foundation's "Truth" campaign from Havas Advertising's Arnold Worldwide, Boston, and MDC Communications Corp.-backed Crispin Porter Bogusky, Miami, "unscrupulous" and "deceitful." It served notice last week that it believes the ads violate the deal with state attorneys general under which tobacco companies fund the foundation and that it will ask a judge to enforce the deal's language barring ads vilifying tobacco makers. Legacy officials denied their ads vilify tobacco companies and charged Lorillard's real concern is the ads are working. QwikFIND aaN08i

American Airlines flies to Interpublic

The consolidation of American Airlines' $30 million global business with Interpublic units Temerlin McClain, Irving, Texas, and Universal McCann, from Omnicom's DDB Worldwide, Dallas, was not a reflection of dissatisfaction with DDB, which had creative, planning and media buying. Rather, the decision to consolidate under the McCann umbrella was a matter of gaining cost savings and efficiencies, according to an American spokesman. Mark Denesuk, chief operating officer at Temerlin McClain, said that the agency's connection to McCann-Erickson WorldGroup helped American's U.S. shop Temerlin McClain win the global account. "We can leverage the resources we have from working on the domestic business to fulfill the needs of the international account more efficiently," he said. QwikFIND aan08g

Staples search remains elusive

Executives with knowledge of the situation said talks were held between retailer Staples about its creative account (now handled by Cliff Freeman & Partners, New York) and Grey Global Group's Grey Worldwide, Los Angeles. Staples VP-Advertising Judy Shapiro denied that, however, and told, "We 100% are not looking at any outside agencies. We're very happy with Cliff Freeman. ...We love the work that's on TV right now for us." Grey executives had no comment. Grey Global Group's MediaCom recently picked up the office supply retailer's $114 million media account. QwikFIND aan08a
