Thankfully Red Interactive's there to provide such a place, the Red Universe. Show up, pick your character, and turn it loose on the strange environment while a bunch of strangers explore with you. Sure, it's just an oversized webchat, but it's couched in such compelling terms (and there's still a layer of company website if you're into that) that we spent a good chunk of time wandering around and changing into all sorts of strange things.
