Hot Spots: Sound

Mitsubishi "Wave"

Do you realize that this song is going to be in your head for the next month and that you'll run out and buy the CD if you don't already have it? Another in the series of typically spot-on track-driven ads from Deutsch, this one a pleasantly dreamy and love-filled scene of strangers waving at the passing vehicle. Oh, and maybe one day you'll run out and buy a Mitsubishi without knowing why.

ESPN "Makeshift"

Once again, Wieden/New York delivers the gems for ESPN and the great Without Sports campaign. The music is low tech and junk-inspired, without straying too far into annoying Stomp territory, and it complements the visuals and the spirit of the spot, which depicts all-American (or possibly Canadian) kids jerry rigging their way into sporting fun. The elephant/jug sound at the beginning is particularly fine.

Monster "Soul Mate"

This new effort from Monster, which aired during the Super Bowl, features two like-minded individuals going about their morning routines unaware that they are about to meet and jive as employer and employee. The footage is subtle and engaging, but the music is the real kicker. It sounds like Ian Dury but it isn't. It's an obscure old track from the Cure (not even included on rarities collections, apparently) sure to thrill hardcore fans and casual TV viewers alike.
