When Chris Kempczinski's two bosses were promoted last November, management at Pepsi-Cola North America gave the then VP-waters a choice of new assignments. The decision was easy for the Procter & Gamble Co. alum.

He now leads a fast-growing portfolio of a dozen noncarbonated brands that include Aquafina, Lipton and Starbucks.

"This job has an operations component," says Mr. Kempczinski, 37. "I do feel like my functional home is marketing, but by the same token I like the challenge of having to look at things from a sales and finance view as well."

His predecessor, Cie Nicholson, now senior VP-chief marketing officer, says he's "the complete package. It's not often you find someone really strategic and yet gets into the day-to-day operations."
