On the road to becoming a French diplomat, Guillaume Jesel got mired merrily in the beauty world.

The 36-year-old , now VP-global makeup marketing for Estee Lauder Cos., had prepared for a life of public service, but a stint as a financial analyst with Ralph Lauren Womenswear in New York redirected him to "a much more creative world than diplomacy."

At Estee Lauder, Mr. Jesel was recruited by the president of the M.A.C. division, John Demsey, for what would become a successful global expansion for the brand.

Then a year ago, Mr. Jesel was asked to help Mr. Demsey, now global brand president of Estee Lauder, to turn around the $1 billion retail Estee Lauder makeup brand and give it new relevance. -stephanie thompson
