Stephen Nedoroscik, a pommel horse specialist on the U.S. men’s gymnastics team, has been perhaps the most surprising breakout star of the Paris Olympics. His meteoric rise to Olympic fame has been fueled in large part by an explosion of memes, fancams and other social content from a newly-formed fandom around Nedoroscik, who, like Clark Kent, removes his glasses to shift from an unassuming, ordinary man into a superhuman.
NBCU’s Olympics & Paralympics TikTok account has leaned into the social media frenzy with a slew of videos revolving around the athlete, the most popular of which simply sets footage of the U.S. men’s gymnastics team members to lyrics from the song “Me, You and Steve” by comedy folk duo Garfunkel and Oates, timing the lyrics “and your friend Steve” to video clips and photos of Nedoroscik. The video has amassed over 9.1 million views, 1.5 million likes and more than 166,000 shares, making it not just the most-viewed piece of content from NBCU related to Nedoroscik but also one of the account’s highest-performing videos overall.
