The retro decadence of Josh Agle, more commonly known as Shag (a conflation of his name), has been collected in a $40 hardcover from Chronicle Books, featuring 200 of Agle's paintings. As the publisher notes, "A Shag painting is unmistakably Agle in that it often takes place in the middle of a story whose conclusion could be hilarious, catastrophic or both, creating a world of endless hinted narratives. Wasp-waisted women in Capri pants, and turtlenecked, eye-patched men of mystery host parties where deathly specters cavort with cranky wolves, regal bulls and blase Adams and Eves sipping martinis." The book also offers essays by art critic Colin Berry and gallery owner Billy Shire, the "Peggy Guggenheim of Lowbrow."
