Framestore CFC, the award-winning London effects and animation shop behind stunners like Levi's "Odyssey" and Guinness' "Surfer," has landed in the Big Apple. U.K. commercials head John Collins will become New York managing director, and he will be joined by a small contingent of artists from the London headquarters. The shop soft-launches in November and will become fully operational by the beginning of 2004.

"We've been doing large U.S. jobs on and off, but that hasn't really helped me establish a relationship with directors and agencies," explains Collins. "My clients always say, 'We'd love it if you were just down the road.' " On the company's decision to open in a country already teeming with great effects shops, Collins notes, "There are certainly great places in the U.S., but what's always surprised me is that there aren't more high-end effects places in New York. It's not too controversial to say that London and L.A. have been seen as the two poles of excellence for visual effects. That people have to travel from New York if they want to do large effects work seemed crazy to me."
