Gun Control Group Brings a Timely Cause to Viral Video Chart

But YouTube Mashup Takes the Top Spot

By Published on .

National momentum behind gun control in reaction to the tragic school shooting in Newtown, Conn., along with promotion in places such as BuzzFeed and Twitter, helped propel a video from Mayors Against Illegal Guns to debut at No. 6 on the Viral Video chart this week. It also didn't hurt that the "Demand a Plan" video features a slew of celebs including Chris Rock, Brooke Shields, Conan O'Brien and Beyoncé.

The video and related campaign encourage people to sign a petition urging President Barack Obama and Congress to develop a plan to end gun violence.

Another debut, however, added some levity to the list. YouTube won the No. 1 spot with "Rewind YouTube Style 2012," a mashup featuring Alphacat, MysteryGuitarMan, Real Annoying Orange and lots of other names recognizable in the viral-video universe. Yes, PSY and his massive hit Gangam Style were there, too.

Also new to the chart this week was a feel-good mini flick from The Cheesecake Factory, created by Pereira & O'Dell, San Francisco. "What Does Joy Smell Like" follows a Cheesecake Factory ambassador spreading aromas such as chocolate and peppermint by popping scented balloons. (The exploded balloons also reveal gift cards for cheesecake.)
