Schwarzenegger cuts tie to Weider mags

Published on .

California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger tried to end a rising conflict-of-interest controversy by announcing last week that he was severing his financial relationship with Weider body-building magazines. The move followed earlier disclosures that the governor, who last year vetoed legislation designed to discourage high school students from using nutritional supplements, was due to receive about $8 million over five years from Weider Publications, which are heavily supported by advertising from supplement marketers. The money was compensation for consulting at Flex and Muscle & Fitness, where he held the title of executive editor. Mr. Schwarzenegger, whose connections to the Weider publishing empire reach back to his earliest days as a rising body-building star, said he was relinquishing the consulting contract as well as his editorial post and pay. Marketer group's PSAs address sex and violence

Amid congressional concerns about violent and sexual content of movies, video games and music, a group with industry heavyweights including major media companies, Wal-Mart and Microsoft launched a public service ad campaign to educate parents about the controls they already have. Three print ads from David & Goliath, Los Angeles, and promotions on the Web site feature an average-looking husband, wife or couple with a tabloid-style headline. "Suburban Mom Wipes Out Army of Bloodthirsty Ninja Assassins," one headline reads and, in smaller type, adds "with eject button on DVD player." The group's executive director, Cindi Merifield Tripoldi said parents don't understand the ratings and technology available and the hope is to send them to the campaign's Web site to learn about the parental-control functions.
