Internet Guide Has Clear Mission

Beth Haggerty wants people to use NetGuide as their primary source of information for all things Net.

"Our mission is to be the first guide that you pick up," says the 37-year-old publishing director of CMP Media's Internet Media Division.

Ms. Haggerty oversees six-month-old Web site, NetGuide Live. NetGuide's ad pages for 1996 were up 31.8% over the previous.year, and the magazine's circulation continues to grow gradually, from 200,000 at launch to its current 325,000.

Ms. Haggerty originally came to CMP Media in 1986 as district manager of InformationWeek, swiftly climbing the ranks to publisher of Communications Week in 1992, where she brought the networking magazine back to its leadership position in two years' time. She left CMP in 1994 to launch Interactive Enterprises in conjunction with Ziff-Davis, and served as publisher of InteractiveWeek.

Adds direction
In July 1995, she returned to CMP as publisher of NetGuide, which at that time was six months old.

In addition to offering direction and guidance to actual "places to go" on the Internet, NetGuide features content that is both business- and consumer-based.

"Our readers don't separate personal and business use of the Net," says Ms. Haggerty.

"Even though I'm a business professional, I may also be a parent, a teacher, or someone who enjoys adventure travel, and NetGuide is there so I don't have to go to another source of information for my personal use of the Net," she adds.
