'Love of Advertising' Boosts Portfolio

Soon after Carol Schuster touched down in New York City, her agency-enhancing initiatives took off.

Although the new managing director of D'Arcy Masius Benton & Bowles' New York office has only been on the job just over three months, Ms. Schuster, 35, has had face-to-face meetings with over half of the New York staff of 392. She has also researched available new business categories and has done evaluations on all existing business.

"I love advertising. I love the people. I love to get into it," says Ms. Schuster, the former CEO at DMB&B/Warsaw and senior VP-managing director, DMB&B Central and Eastern Europe. "I'm very hands-on, and to know what's going on, management has got to know the people."

Ms. Schuster's skills at building new relationships proved invaluable when she was given the task of founding a new DMB&B outpost in Warsaw in 1991. At the age of 29, she was sent to Poland with nothing more than some money and a mission.

Within two months, she had commercials for Procter & Gamble Co. products airing throughout central Europe. The Warsaw office now touts blue-chip clients P&G, Mars, Philips and Coca-Cola Co. and reported billings of $40 million in 1995.

"She was instantly able to bond and build very warm relations in Poland," says DMB&B North American President Arthur Selkowitz. "She has a can-do spirit and a great ability to get people to rally around her."
