Adidas has teamed up with ocean conservation group Parley for the Oceans to make a sports shoe out of recycled plastic from the ocean.

The shoe, designed by British designer Alexander Taylor, was unveiled at a Parley for the Oceans event at the UN last week. In place of ordinary threads and yarns, Taylor used fibers made from waste plastic and illegal deep sea fishing nets to design the shoe. Parley partner Sea Shepherd retrieved the nets after a 110-day expedition tracking an illegal poaching vessel, which culminated off the coast of West Africa. The shoe is just a concept for now, but Adidas says it plans to launch the design as part of a wider range of sportswear next year.
