Next week in New York, remarkably enough, it's not Fashion Week and it's not even Advertising Week. For a refreshing change of pace, it's Type Week. Yes, Mayor Mike Bloomberg, possibly compensating for the loss of the Olympics and a Manhattan stadium for the Jets, has designated July 18-24 Type Week, and the festivities are based around TypeCon 2005: Alphabet City, hosted by the Parsons School of Design. Designer Graham Clifford (www.grahamclifforddesign.com) calls the event "one of the largest collections of letter-loving font fiends and designers ever assembled. And I'm telling them where to go." Which is to say, Clifford has created a poster-size map of Manhattan neighborhoods "from a variety of aptly chosen typefaces," as he puts it.
