Burger King Spoof Documentary Reveals What Happened During Its Absence From France

Black Market Whoppers, Exiles and More in Buzzman's Satirical Comedy

Editor's Pick

Burger King's efforts to promote its return to France after a prolonged absence from the country have included some witty social campaigns by Paris agency Buzzman - such as offering to fund a fan's house move to take them nearer a BK, and allowing people who do have a branch in their town to mock others on digital billboards. Now, the brand and agency have created a spoof documentary detailing what happened during the fast food chain's 15 year disappearance from France.

The seven minute long "Whopper Blackout" film details how desperate fans poured over the Channel to England to find Burger King branches (one couple even naming their child "Whopper" as a result), and the absence of Whoppers created a black market, smugglers and traumatized burger addicts.

This is a well-crafted black comedy --- although the theme of psychological trauma sits somewhat uneasily given that France has genuinely gone through some tough times recently, and its portrait of addiction may feel a little close to the bone for some.
