VW's 'Speed'-Inspired Blockbuster Can't Quite Pull It Off
Cinema Ad's Big Twist Promotes Cool Safety Feature
Editor's Pick
Volkswagen recreates a scene from a classic movie but with a car-related twist, in this new cinema ad supporting its sponsorship of independent cinema. It's the first of a new series of films, created by adam&eveDDB, that sees the brand move away from its much-awarded "See film differently" platform of the past few years, with the new line "Made for real life, not the movies." According to the agency, the new creative idea comes from the simple observation that although Volkswagen cars may be great for the needs of everyday life, their safety features mean they wouldn't be great cars to have in action movies. This spot, directed by Paul W.S. Anderson ("Resident Evil") at MOB Films, was inspired by "Speed" -- but just at the crucial moment when our hero is trying to board the speeding bus from a car that's chasing it, the car's warning light goes off to tell him it's too close. The next two films (entitled Chase and Explosion) will break in August and then October.
