On the heels of the Spike Jonze-helmed music video winning multiple Lions at Cannes this year, Kenzo has debuted another mesmerizing film to promote the brand's Fall/Winter 2017/18 collections.
"Cabiria, Charity, Chastity" marks the directorial debut of "Orange Is the New Black" actress Natasha Lyonne and stars Maya Rudolph ("Saturday Night Live") along with a string of other celebs: Fred Armisen ("Saturday Night Live"), Greta Lee ("Money Monster"), James Ransone ("The Wire"), Waris Ahluwalia ("The Grand Budapest Hotel"), Matt Lucas ("Doctor Who"), Macaulay Culkin ("Home Alone"), Leslie Odom Jr. ("Smash") and Lyonne herself.
The film centers on the journey of a woman named Chastity, played by Rudolph. Her character (based on Giulietta Masina's character in "La Strada" and Shirley MacLaine's in "Sweet Charity") is a sad performer who embarks on a quest to find her soul (and speaks in a made-up language that Rudolph speaks so fluently that you might think it's a real one). "Sometimes being a person can be a real nightmare," she says, as she recalls her days at La Strada School for Clowns.
The 13-minute short is the fifth film commissioned by Kenzo creative directors and Opening Ceremony founders Carol Lim and Humberto Leon. Previous films have included "The Realest Real" by Carrie Brownstein and "Music Is My Mistress" by Khalil Joseph.
"We've been really trying to use the Kenzo platform to give new actors and people in the industry a first chance at being the director," Leon says. "It's not a fashion film. We want every director to make a film that is rich in storytelling, has a very strong narrative, and then there happens to be clothes in it so it's kind of a reverse formula."
