If you're a cat owner, and you've always wanted to know what your kitty is up to when you're not at home, now's your chance to find out. A new app designed for cat lovers is more than just a webcam -- it actually lets your cat take "selfies."

Designed by Brooklyn-based Current Studios, Candid Catmera uses "custom cat facial recognition technology" to snap photos of cats when they come near your device, and send you a message to let you know. The app lures the cats in with looping animations featuring mice, fish or treats.

Current tested the app with cats housed at Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), and will donate $1 to the organization for every download of Candid Catmera. Current's VP of creative technology, Steve Martell, said in a statement: "We've been challenged a few times to create tech that recognizes pets and our team wanted create an algorithm that only recognized cats. We thought it'd be fun and a chance to give back to an organization that we believe in."

It's certainly a fun idea for a good cause, and in combining two of the biggest phenomena of the social media age, is sure to appeal. We're a bit worried about those claws on our iPad screen though.
