Ten years after Baz Luhrmann directed Nicole Kidman in a Moulin Rouge-inspired ad for Chanel No. 5, the Australian director and iconic fragrance brand have teamed up again, this time with supermodel (and advertising star du jour) Gisele Bundchen. And although there are nods to Luhrmann's "Great Gatsby" in the storyline and Long Island setting, Bundchen plays a thoroughly modern heroine who surfs, models and has a cute daughter.
Set to a slow, sexy rendition of "You're The One That I Want" from "Grease," performed by indie musician Lo-Fang, the film opens with Bundchen surfing (with a Chanel-branded board, naturally). It goes on to show her living in a luxurious modernist Hamptons beach house, seeing her little girl off to school (with a Chanel rucksack), driving over the Queensboro Bridge and going off to her day job of modeling. It's not until the end of the day that she finally meets up with her husband, who left her the note that had her looking so mournful earlier.
According to Vogue, Lurhmann said at a press conference in New York today that the ad reflects Bundchen's own character: "This woman has a child, a real job and then she has this relationship. Gisele is the Chanel woman now."
Bundchen recently has become the face of Under Armour and has also appeared in ads for H&M and Victoria's Secret.
