China Marketing: Peaches in Panties

Editor's Pick

By now, you've probably seen these panty-clad peaches. The sexy fruits went viral yesterday, earning coverage in their native China as well as in mainstream U.S. media such as Kotaku and New York Magazine. They're the idea of a Nanjing-based fruit seller named Yao Xiaoyang, who teamed up with local lingerie firm IDFIX to make his peaches stand out from the rest of the pack, and promote them as a new kind of gift to give your loved one tomorrow, which happens to be Valentine's Day in China.

Ad Age spoke with Mr. Yao, who said he named the special fruits "When the Peaches Are Ripe," which plays off the name of a sexy Chinese film. Mr. Yao sells them online and on WeChat for about $84 or 520 yuan. A steep, yet convenient price since according to the Ad Age story, "5-2-0 in Chinese sounds like the Chinese words for 'I Love You.'"
