The medium was the message and vice versa when London's Lunar BBDO recently advertised for a typographer/designer. Three print ads and posters "were created to appeal only to that narrow target," says Lunar's Daryl Corps, so "the copy is written in Webdings, Zapf Dingbats and Wingdings picture fonts that would be meaningless to most people, but recognizable to the discerning typographer. With the addition of nods to the classic design of Bauhaus, Josef Muller-Brockman and Jan Tschichold, and media placement around art colleges and in the typography press," he notes, the ads netted some 30 replies and a hire. See the PDF for keys to the symbols, but here's the cheat sheet: "Mac-based typographer/designer wanted. Award-winning ad agency seeks help with its Mac/design output. West End space provided in exchange for negotiable hours of work. Contact Daryl Corps on 07802 499 658."
