Today, Facebook made another move to address its fake news problem with what it described as a "new educational tool against misinformation," in a blog post from Newsfeed VP Adam Mosseri.
The company partnered with nonprofit First Draft, which works to address the challenges related to discerning "truth in the digital age" by helping to improve the standards of reporting and sharing information online. The new tool, which appears at the top of users' Newsfeed, debuted today in 14 countries and will roll out for a few days.
As you can see in the demo video, the new offering seems not so much a "tool," as it is a a detailed list of tips on how to spot fake news, like being "skeptical of headlines," checking out the URL carefully, being wary of weird formatting and photos. But a tool is supposed to be something that helps ease the burden of work, not add to it. As Engadget put it, "This latest tool, like the 'false news' reporting feature that debuted in December, is completely passive and relies exclusively on the user to take initiative."
