General Mills Taps Comics Giant for Package Design Update

General Mills' monster-themed cereals Boo Berry, Franken Berry and Count Chocula may inspire a lot of nostalgic feelings among many of us, but today, they're sporting a fresh new look, courtesy of DC Comics.

General Foods tapped the comics giant to give the breakfast goonies a modern-day makeover. Jim Lee, known for his work on "Batman," "Justice League" and "Superman," among others, brushed up the ghostly Boo Berry; Dave "The Reverend" Johnson ("Deadpool," "Batman") gave a fresh face to Frank Berry, while Terry and Rachel Dodson ("Harley Quinn," "Uncanny X-Men," "Wonder Woman") revamped Count Chocula.

Along with the new box covers, the artists also created comic strips to adorn the backs of the cereal packages.

"We wanted to ensure that Count Chocula, Franken Berry and Boo Berry still looked like the Monsters our fans know and love, but with a DC Comics twist," said General Mills Monsters Marketing Manager Lauren Pradhan in a statement on the GM blog.

To accompany the redesign, General Mills also launched a free digital game app available on boxes of other cereal brands, including Lucky Charms, Honey Nut Cheerios and Cocoa Puffs. The Monsters Cereals will be available nationwide in the U.S. and select retailers in Canada by September.
