Gucci has tapped designer Tommey Walker and his streetwear brand Detroit Vs. Everybody for a new collaboration via its social impact arm Gucci Changemakers North America.
Walker stars in a campaign video highlighting the effort, which stretches beyond Detroit to include Atlanta, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, New Orleans, New York, Philadelphia, San Francisco and Washington, D.C.
“There was a time when my city wasn’t just down, it was getting kicked while it was down,” says Walker in the 90-second video which looks back on the founding of his brand. “We don’t ask for anything in return—just respect. Look, Detroit Vs. Everybody has always been there—I just put it on a shirt.”
The video was created with D/CAL, the Detroit-based brand consultancy and creative agency.
Walker goes on to explain the new collaboration and why it goes beyond his city. “Detroiters aren’t the only ones who have been up against it, so Gucci and I are making Detroit Vs. Everybody for everybody.”
The new limited-edition line features t-shirts in the style of the DVE brand, but co-branded with the Gucci logo on the back. This is D/CAL’s first time working with the fashion house, which initiated the relationship late last year by awarding the agency creative development and production duties. A portion of the proceeds from the sales of the shirts will go to community scholarships that support nonprofits that foster community engagement and help students, including Design Core and Journi, which are both based in Detroit.
D/CAL also worked with Gucci to create a custom mural by BakPak Durden, an artist based in Detroit.
