Animated Spot Featuring '80s Cartoon Characters Follows U.K. Ads for MoneySupermarket

What is it about He-Man and Skeletor? The '80s cartoon characters have been starring in a U.K. campaign for MoneySupermarket.com (most recently in a pastiche of "Dirty Dancing"), the villain starred in an Instagram "#Skeletakover" for Honda, and now here they come again, in an spot for Geico.

The Martin Agency teamed up with Mattel for the spot, which was animated by J.J. Sedelmaier, of Saturday Night Live "TV Funhouse" fame, who is known for his retro parodies. It sees Skeletor escape from He-Man (plus other characters Teela, Man at Arms and Battle Cat) in classic evil villain style: when asked to give one good reason why they shouldn't vanquish him, he replies with Geico's message about saving on your car insurance and He-Man takes the bait.

While the MoneySupermarket "He-Man" ads, by Mother, aren't animated, and of course won't be seen by the same TV viewers, it's an interesting choice by Geico, but definitely part of a trend. As advertisers target the kids of the '70s and '80s, other nostalgic cartoon characters have been appearing in campaigns for the likes of the U.K.'s Halifax (which has featured Scooby Doo, Top Cat and Fred Flintstone in its recent ads by Adam&Eve/DDB). We're wondering who's next.
