From photobombing cats to poor Wi-Fi, Heineken documents the perils of video calls

Latest lockdown spot was filmed in isolation by Smuggler DOPs, who doubled as talent alongside their roommates and family

Now that video call drinking parties are the only way to consume alcohol with your friends, some of the perils of screen socializing are becoming clear—the subject of Heineken's latest ad.

Having urged us to "socialize responsibly" in its first coronavirus spot last month, agency Publicis now moves on to what this actually entails, including dodgy W-Fi connections, trying to grab your phone and your drink at the same time, being photobombed by your cat or your phone running out of battery mid-call.  It ends with the words: "It's not the best get-together, but it's the best way to get together."

The spot was all filmed in isolation by cinematographers via production company Smuggler. The shooters themselves, their housemates and family all filled in as "actors." Director Chris Smith, whose work includes "Tiger King" and "Fyre Festival" helmed the spot from his home in L.A. The music is a cover of David Lee Roth’s version “That’s life”, recorded by Sizzer in Amsterdam.
