Ai Wei Wei, the iconic Chinese dissident, appears as a mysterious, almost mystical figure in this short film by director Jason Wishnow set in a dystopian Chinese city.
Earler this year, China's most famous artist shut down the Kickstarter for the nine-minute short, but he's now given permission to Wishnow for it to be shown. (Original Vimeo link here.)
The film, about four people dealing with a water shortage in the "near future," was shot in secret in Beijng during a period of toxic air pollution last year; Ai Wei Wei, in goggles and a huge overcoat, plays a water smuggler who helps a woman struggling with the city in turmoil. The short premiered last week at the Telluride Film Festival and on Fandor, the subscription film website.
