It probably would have worked even better in New York this morning, where ice and snow were disrupting the commute, but Londoners were surprised on the tube, or subway, by an eight-foot animatronic polar bear. The stunt was devised for Sky, which is promoting "Fortitude," a crime drama set in the Arctic tha will debut on its Sky Atlantic channel. The bear -- which reportedly took 19 designers two months to construct -- is operated by two professional puppeteers, who use hidden cameras to see.

Zai Bennett, director of Sky Atlantic, is quoted as saying: "To launch our new Arctic-noir thriller we wanted to bring a realistic polar bear to the streets of London to give people an up-close experience of what it must be like to come face to face with one."

We have a feeling a real-life encounter wouldn't be so friendly . . .
