Coming out is tougher than teenage heartbreak for LGBTQ kids in this campaign aimed at parents
Love has everything to do with it in spots from the Los Angeles LGBT Center
Editor's Pick
For many LGBTQ people, coming out is an experience fraught with emotional and legal repercussions. Right now, the U.S. Supreme Court is debating whether employers can fire people solely because of their sexuality.
LGBTQ young people face the awful possibility of condemnation from their parents and family, and a new campaign for the Los Angeles LGBT Center shows the traumatic consequences of that rejection. Timed for National Coming Out Day last week, a pair of films are aimed at parents confused about how they should act when their child comes out.
The first spot, directed by Station Film’s Lena Beug, compares typical teenage heartbreak—a first love, not fitting in at school—to the anguish inflicted by angry parents who can’t handle the news they’ve just been given. The spot is accompanied by a cover of Tina Turner's “What’s Love Got to Do With It?” performed by Rose Cousins. A companion spot gives the vignettes happier outcomes, because the parents have learned to accept their children as they are.
The campaign by RPA is running in TV, digital, social and cinema placements donated by Hulu, National CineMedia, Spectrum, Twitch, Twitter and Tubi. It will also be shared by esports franchise Team Liquid.
