Young Female Entrepreneurs Look to Debut Another Girl Power Toy Line

Goldieblox May Have Some Company Soon

Girl power is clearly on the rise, and more entrepreneurs are looking to filll the void of messages and products that seek to empower girls and young women. In 2012, Debbie Sterling introduced Goldieblox, an engineering building set aimed at girls that went on to win a spot on this year's Super Bowl. And now, a group of young women hope to give Barbie and American Girl some brainy company with the launch of Miss Possible, a line of dolls inspired by some of history's most accomplished women.

Co-founded by recent University of Illinois engineering grads Supriya Hobbs and Janna Eaves, Miss Possible proposes to feature cute doll versions of chemist Marie Curie, programmer Ada Lovelace and aviator Bessie Coleman. Accompanying each doll will be an app that illustrates their accomplishments and provides girls with hands-on activities. Later, fans will be invited to promote the next doll to be created for the line.

The Miss Possible line is not a sure thing but is nearing the end of a $75,000 funding campaign on Indiegogo. With nine days left, the project needs to raise just about $3,000 more to launch.

Ms. Hobbs and Ms. Eaves were inspired by their observations of girls and their aspirations. As she recounts on the Indiegogo site, Ms. Hobbs noticed, for example, that during an invention workshop for girls she lead with Ms. Eaves, there was one girl who was obsessed with explosions and full of ideas to make things around them, but when asked what she wanted to be when she grew up, she responded, "fashion designer."

"Why should this be any surprise when so much of what they see around them is focused on fashion?" Ms. Hobbs wrote on the site. "We want to shake up the images [girls] usually see, and show them other alternatives for what they can become!"
