New York City FC, New York's professional soccer team, unveiled its 2016 jersey this week. But instead of revealing it at a press conference, it gave four fans a first look, as shown in this video by new agency of record Johannes Leonardo.
The film shows Club Captain David Villa and players Andrea Pirlo and Kwadwo Poku surprising the fans, who thought they were being filmed for a documentary. The fans are Omari McCleary, a youth worker who uses soccer to empower underprivileged kids, Mauro Servisi and Michele Costa, best friends who run an Italian food business in Soho, and Mick Mellamphy, who moved to New York City in 2000 from Ireland and now owns and operates a pub on the Upper East Side.
The jersey design uses the New York City flag as the basis for the core colors of blue and orange. New York City FC's principal partner, Etihad Airways, is showcased in orange in the middle of the jersey.
Fans also had their say on elements of the jersey, voting to include "This City Never Sleeps" on the back neck tape, which sits alongside "This is Your City This is Your Club" running through the neck tape.
