The Polish Red Cross has been encouraging donations by getting restaurant customers to leave their knives and forks in the sign of a cross when they finish their meals. Participating restaurants used table mats which explained that the customers who would like to donate to the charity should leave their cultery crossed. If they signalled their wish to donate, the restaurant would add 1.5 euros to the bill. Donations will go towards the one in four Polish children who don't get a hot meal on a regular basis. The campaign, which was devised by Cheil Poland, resulted in a 65% increase in donations. The Red Cross is now planning to introduce the idea in other European countries.
