This LGBTQ film festival is 'straight-friendly,' even if you don't know what 'aunties,' 'bears' and 'fruit flies' are
In its 23rd year, Queer Lisboa continues provocative promotions
Editor's Pick
Portuguese film festival Queer Lisboa is putting out a call for viewers: Aunties, bears, beards, friends of Dorothy and twinks are all invited to watch movies that feature LGBTQ actors and themes. Don’t recognize any of those terms? Don’t worry—the festival is proudly “Straight Friendly,” too.
A tongue-in-cheek spot promoting the festival’s twenty-third year presents a litany of slang terms for LGBTQ people. Many of the words were originally used as slurs by straight people, but like “queer,” they’ve been adopted as terms of defiance and used by people in the LGBTQ community to express particular aspects of their identity.
The ad, directed by Alexandre Montenegro vis Show-Off Films, is from Coming Soon, an agency founded by creative duo Marcelo Lourenço and Pedro Bexiga. The pair have been responsible for Queer Lisboa’s campaigns since 2010, beginning at their former agency Fuel Lisboa. Last year’s ad—which featured a chorus of mothers of LGBTQ children singing “You Are So Beautiful”—was Coming Soon’s first work for the festival.
