Will clothing retailers and department stores go the way of Tower Records and bookstores? Developments in AR technology have been making online shopping even closer to a bricks and mortar experience, as evident in the KinectShop Kinect hack out of Razorfish's Emerging Experience team.
Billed as a "next gen" virtual shopping experience, KinectShop doesn't overlay 2D photos of clothes on shoppers' bodies. Instead, the new AR platform maps clothing and accessories onto 3D versions, allowing users to pose and turn to see all angles of themselves with the item they're sampling, just as they would in a real world fitting room, with a three-way mirror. The platform allows for sharing with friends on social media channels, and goods can be synced with QR codes or NFC payment options so that they can be purchased on the spot.
