Purina Animal Nutrition has launched a heartwarming holiday spot that revolves around a rescue horse called Sam.

It takes place on Christmas Eve, where the owner is closing up the stables for the night. Before he turns the lights off, he pats Sam's nose and says "Maybe next year" (in a scene slightly reminiscent of McDonald's U.K. holiday spot, featuring not a horse but a doll). The sight of Sam standing there in the dark is pretty heartbreaking, whether or not you're a horse lover. Luckily, Christmas day sees an upturn in his fortunes, as a little girl arrives to say hello to her new adoptive horse.

Created by The Martin Agency, and directed by Cole Webley at Sanctuary, the spot is aimed at raising awareness of rescue horses. It ties in with Purina's sponsorship of "A Home for Every Horse" -- an organization that connects horses in need of a new home with horse lovers who can provide a safe and caring environment.
