San Francisco MOMA Launches Recipe Book Based on Artworks

Dessert chef Caitlin Freeman is inspired by modern artists

Baking meets modern art in a new recipe book being published by the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. The museum, which will shortly close for renovations for three years, is publishing Modern Art Desserts: Recipes for Cakes, Cookies, Confections, and Frozen Treats Based on Iconic Works of Art . Author Caitlin Freeman creates desserts inspired by the works of modern art on display at SFMOMA, selling them at the Blue Bottle Coffee bar, the cafe she and her husband, Blue Bottle founder James Freeman, operate inside the museum. Artists featured include Matisse, Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol, while the cafe's most popular item is a cake based on the art of Piet Mondrian, featuring blocks of white velvet cake, colored red, blue and yellow, stacked together and "glued" with chocolate.
