Tesco App Browses Twitter Feeds to Identify Gift Suggestions

Tesco, the U.K.'s biggest supermarket, is offering to take the stress out of Christmas shopping with a new app that scrapes information from Twitter accounts to help users choose the right presents for friends and family.

"Secret Scan-ta" analyzes a person's Twitter habits and then selects the most appropriate gift from 500 possible items, all available at Tesco. The choices cover a range of interests, from tech and homeware to fashion and music. While the app is scanning, playful GIFs show "Scan-ta" busy at work.

The app, created by We Are Social, promotes Tesco's Clubcard loyalty program. You don't have to be a Clubcard holder to use Secret Scan-ta, but members who buy gifts through the app get double loyalty points added to their accounts. Each week, five shoppers will be selected at random to receive 5,000 Clubcard points, and one winner will get a Samsung Galaxy S5 for Christmas.
