This Family Christmas Sing-Along Isn't Quite What You Expect

Andreas Nilsson Serves Up a Festive Surprise for TK Maxx

Thus far, perhaps with the exception of Burberry's cinematic trailer, we haven't seen anything desperately original among the U.K. Christmas advertising-fest. But the festive offering from TK Maxx changes that, with a very different, very funny spot from Wieden & Kennedy London, directed by Biscuit's Andreas Nilsson ("Epic Split.")

The scene is a beautifully decorated house in the snow, with a festively-dressed family all gathered around the piano. Grandma opens her mouth to sing what you expect might be a carol or "Jingle Bells." However, when she starts gargling with her cup of tea, you start to suspect something is up. After a few seconds, it dawns on you that they're all breaking into an a cappella chorus of "Misirlou," best known as the theme music from Tarantino's "Pulp Fiction" (surely the least heartwarming film you can think of). Even the dog joins in and everyone, even a cute baby, has a hilarious part to play.

The point of all this? To illustrate the tagline: "Christmas is at its best when it's more surprising" -- promoting TK Maxx's "surprising gifts at surprising prices." It's brilliantly quirky fun and is sure to stand out among all the more whimsical offerings.
