Tesco is using TikTok to find its next checkout voice
The call-out from BBH London uses TikTok’s duet feature
Editor's Pick
Do you have what it takes to be the next Tesco automated checkout voice? Some Tesco TikTok fans think so.
The U.K.'s biggest grocery retailer posted its first-ever TikTok earlier this week -- a call-out for fans to "audition" to be the new voice by duetting with the original video. That involves saying a few key automated checkout phrases that will be familiar to regular Tesco shoppers, like "Please check my bagging area" and "Clubcard accepted," as well as making the "beep" noise that sounds when items are scanned.
The TikTok, which launched three days ago, has already gained 5 million views, and has over 1,600 submissions. The best videos will be featured on Tesco’s TikTok channel before the ultimate winner is chosen. Their voice will be uploaded to checkouts across the country.
Tesco’s agency BBH London came up with the idea after seeing that customers were already talking about the grocery retailer on TikTok. The hashtag #TescoClubcard has over 13 million views.
Tesco isn’t the first brand to do a duet hashtag challenge. In March, Dunkin Donuts used TikTok as a casting tool, having creators and fans enter by duetting Dunkin’s original video and reading scripted lines. The hashtag #dunkincastingcall has 9.6 million views.
“We're thrilled to have launched on TikTok,” Dan Porter, Tesco’s head of content, social and consumer public relations said in a statement. It’s really important to us that everything we do is distinctly Tesco and native to TikTok at the same time.”
