The Economist Launches Mandela Microsite With Moving Interactive Film

Magazine Pays Tribute To One Of Its Most Famous Readers

The Economist has launched an interactive film as a tribute to the late Nelson Mandela (who was an avid reader of the publication during his imprisonment on Robben Island). Created by London's AMV.BBDO, and hosted on a microsite entitled mandelaswalk.com, it shows people walking into an open field, each carrying an object and then placing it on the ground. The seemingly random objects include an old mattress, clothing and flowers, as well as a battered copy of the magazine. As the camera pans out, it's revealed that, from above, they form a large image of the outline of Mandela's face.

Viewers can click on the individual objects that appear in the film to reveal content from a selection of articles taken from The Economist's archives, each relevant to a particular time in Mandela's life. ACNE was the production company on the project, and the film's narrator is black British poet Benjamin Zephaniah, who reads a script written by AMV.BBDO.
