A VW tears up a small town's streets in insane ad shot on people's phones
Gymkhana vets and onlookers captured this stunt-driven spot from DDB Toronto
Editor's Pick
The denizens of a small town in Quebec, Canada got a treat when Nascar pro Maryeve Dufault took her skills to their streets driving the new 2019 Jett GLI. In a film capturing her antics, she swerves dangerously near onlookers as she zooms down roads normally reserved for pedestrians and everyday commuters—content captured largely by the residents themselves on their mobile phones, drones and GoPros. Even a dog stepped in to document her final moves as she emerges from her car unscathed.
Surprisingly, given her daring tricks, none the onlookers were hurt either—including a skateboarder who seemed perilously close as she swept past him on a bridge.
That’s testament to Dufault’s skills, as well as the team at DDB Canada and performance driving and content company Hoonigan—including director Brian Scotto (known for his skills on Ken Block’s Gymkhana films) who were there to steer the show.
According to an agency rep, ahead of the shoot, Scotto gave the locals a crash course, of sorts, on the best camera angles and techniques to use for shooting. He also placed them in key, but safe, spots to document the action. About 80% of the content was captured on people’s devices.
And that skateboarder? He was actually a member of the Hoonigan production crew and his scene wasn’t in the original script. He pitched the idea while on set and the team went for it.
