MTV's WatchWith app is providing a second screen social media experience that curates social media conversation while you watch the network's shows. The app, available for download on iTunes for the iPad/iPhone as well as for the desktop, delivers content that is relevant to the show you're viewing, progressing as it goes on. The content will include tweets from the show's cast, comments by Facebook friends about what's going on, as well as photos and videos of cast members and behind the scenes action.
Cast members from shows like Jersey Shore, Teen Wolf and Awkward will be live-tweeting during the shows' premieres -- and fans will be able to follow along.
This is another attempt by television networks to engage viewers more completely while they're watching the tube -- previously an entirely passive experience. NBC's singing competition show "The Voice" had a similar attempt earlier this summer when it included a strong social media component, with live tweets from contestants and a dedicated "social media room" where viewers could tweet in questions.
