HomeAway Illustrates the Perils of 'Sharing' Your Vacation
Spot by Saatchi London Pokes Fun at Rivals Like Airbnb
Editor's Pick
Airbnb has been working so hard to tell us about the benefits of renting someone else's home. Now, rival home rental site HomeAway comes along with a film that amusingly illustrates the perils of the sharing economy when it comes to vacation.
The spot, by Saatchi & Saatchi London and directed by Tim Heidecker & Eric Wareheim of Prettybird (creators of comedy shows on Adult Swim), compares renting a whole house to sharing someone else's home or going to a hotel.
It asks, do you really want to travel 2,000 miles to share the pool with annoying kids and obnoxious idiots, listen to a couple arguing at the next table, watch some guy clip his toenails, or (in probably the funniest moment) find hair on the soap? While it doesn't namecheck Airbnb, you know exactly who it's talking about here. The ad, airing in the U.K. and online, makes the point that with HomeAway, you can rent a whole home.
In a statement, Mariano Dima, chief marketing officer at HomeAway, said: "Our new campaign demonstrates the problem of over-sharing, using humor to show how a whole house is an upgrade from status quo accommodations and sharing economy alternatives. Holidays are precious, so every moment should be about sharing the right things with the right people to ensure a more holistic, private and memorable holiday."
