Experience Waves Like a Pro Surfer With Jeep's VR Experience
Technology Simulates Catching Waves Through a Surfer's Eyes
Editor's Pick
Tying in with its partnership with the World Surf League, Jeep is giving surf enthusiasts the chance to experience waves like the pros with a virtual reality experience.
Creative agency Xister and VR studio Specular Theory created the live-action VR surf experience using proprietary technology to capture the first-person point of view of surfers, shooting on location in Malibu and Mexico. (Since the camera could not actually be placed in the surfer's eyes, Specular Theory created a custom post-production pipeline to simulate this viewpoint.) This allows even those who've never stood up on a board to feel as if they're catching a swell or ridinig inside a huge barrel.
The film is currently being showcased at the World Surf League's 2015 Samsung Galaxy Championship Tour across Europe, with participants using a Samsung Gear VR headset.
