In Japan, Nissan and TBWA/Hakuhodo put together a golf competition that took players through dunes, waterfalls, cliffs, underground caves and piles of rubble during four days of golf scattered over 1,200 miles.

Players used Nissan's X-Trail SUV to get from hole to hole; the 18-hole event was branded the "X-Treme Golf Cup 2015." The competition got 300 applicants from Japanese professionals and amateurs. Three men skilled at golf and other sports were selected to compete, and an X-Trail Hybrid was the grand prize.

Last year, Nissan and TBWAHakuhodo collaborated on another project to spotlight the ruggedness of the X-Trail, putting phone booths advertising pizza delivery in remote areas of wilderness. Drivers were paid $845 an hour to navigate the SUV on rough terrain and deliver the pizzas.
