Freaky rapping BBQ emojis tell the French to eat less meat
'Gangsta Grill' for Greenpeace has a retro '90s vibe-- and the 'eww' factor
Editor's Pick
France is not a counry known for its embrace of vegetarianism--the average person eats 86 kg of meat per year in France, twice the world average. But Greenpeace France is making an attempt to persuade the country to consume less meat (as opposed to going vegetarian or vegan)--and it's using a bunch of rapping meat emojis to to do it.
Together with agency 84.Paris, it's created a music video called the "BBQ song" in which "Gangsta Grill," an animoji group consisting of a swine (Notorious P.I.G.), chicken, sheep, and cow, encourages us to reconsider what we put on the grill.
The rapping is done by French beatboxer and imitator Eklips who emulates the stylings of '90s hip-hop artists and rappers like Notorious B.I.G., Snoop Dogg and others, with the video's style enhancing the retro vibe. While the singing meat has a definite "eww" factor, we're presuming this is the point--to gross people out about their flesh-filled grills.
The lyrics encourage listeners not to give up meat entirely but to reduce their meat consumption, eat locally, and consider vegetable alternatives. Laure Ducos, agriculture campaigns at Greenpeace France, says in a statement: "We wanted to address barbecue amateurs and remind them of the problems industrial meat production causes to our health and environment. It's not about depriving yourself this summer, but just consuming less and well."
