5. Amazon Studios: ‘The Report’ Redaction Campaign, In-house, Creative Impact Agency
Last week, when readers sat down to peruse newspapers like The New York Times, the L.A. Times and USA Today, they may have discovered bars and bars of redacted copy on their front pages. It turns out they were all part of a campaign from Amazon Studios promoting the new film “The Report,” about the CIA’s post-9/11 interrogation and detention program. The campaign also included traveling animated signs by artist Jenny Holzer, which used words from the film’s original script. It also extended into social media, with redacted posts from other brands like Vice, IMDb and more.
4. Farrow and Ball: ‘English Roast,’ BMB
Earlier this month, Saturday Night Live ran a sketch making fun of the high prices and general hoity-toitiness of British paint brand Farrow & Ball. The company, along with agency BMB responded with this snarky, tactical ad in the The New York Times, introducing “English Roast,” a new “Saturday Night Live”-themed “col-our.”
3. John Lewis/Waitrose: ‘Excitable Edgar,’ adam&eve/DDB
adam&eve/DDB debuted its latest addition to the John Lewis Christmas pantheon, an adorable tale about a well-meaning dragon who can’t seem to control his fiery breath, so he threatens to ruin all the wintery festivities at his town. Fortunately, his sweet friend discovers the perfect use for his flames.
2. Rovio: ‘Rage Rider,’ Droga5
Rovio’s “Angry Birds” will celebrate its tenth anniversary in December and, to celebrate, Droga5 created the Rage Rider, a ridiculous anger-powered scooter that moves only if you scream. It’s part of a broader “Bring the Anger” campaign which aims to show how your fury can actually be fuel for something good.
1. Renault Clio: ‘The French Exchange,’ Publicis Poke
For the Renault Clio’s 30th anniversary, the automaker and agency created this film showing the evolution of the car over the years. But that was just the backdrop to a powerful love story showing how the friendship of two girls blossomed into something much deeper over the decades.
